Work at Clinic, Quinua and Wari ruins, and the orphanage
in the butt

Sorry its taken me awhile to write... once I get outta work Im usually too tired or too busy exploring the city to even think about writing a blog. BUUUUTTT, I´ll fill you all in on whats happened this week.
So, first off...tuesday I started work at the clinic. It sucked, only because I did nothing but fold cotton swabs for 2 hours. There is this a huelga (longterm strike) going on over wages or something in all the public clinics and schools so my clinic was empty. Luckily Marisol, our house like manager woman that i love to death, switched me to another clinic and I get to work there with my roommate who I also love. So wednesday, day 2 of work, was much more exciting and eventful. Me and the 2 other volunteers went with the nurses to a private school where we weighed, measured, and quizzed all these adorable little kids from ages 3 to 9. After that we went on a tour of the wari ruins and this gorgeous little town called Quinua. I NEED to go back there and live there for a little bit at some point in my life.... they have a clinic, a hostel, a bodega, restaurant, and little artisan shops.... thats all I really need.
The wari ruins were pretty sweet. The waris were before the Incas. I was exhausted at that point, so theres not too much for me to explain. Its amazing how tired you get up here, 9,500ft is rough. We´ll see how I do on the llama trek (top of mountain if 14,500ft) next weekend.
Ok so thursday, day 3 of work was my favorite so far. I learned so much in one day. Pooja (my roommate) and I would take patients (mostly pregnant women) in and would get their name, weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature etc. I watched a few vaccines in peoples butts which was just so fun to watch. Im pretty sure theyre going to let me do some soon... I cant even explain how excited I am to give vaccines in the ass.
Then after we went up to obstetricians office and watched examinations of pregnant women and the doctor was letting me feel the womans stomach and find the head, feet, back, etc.
I just did so many new things in one day that are so valuable to my major, it was a fantastic day.
We ended our week with a trip to the orphanage on friday. The kids were adorable but it was hard to watch how in need of affection they were. As soon as Id sit down like 8 kids would be on top of me. The babies were so cute it like actually hurt. Im in love with a 2 year old boy named Den´is. I really want to adopt him. I dont think theyll let me though.
Funny thing about the orphanage though.... i suddenly noticed all the kids were picking at eachothers scalps (this was after I let 5 or 6 girls put braids in my hair) and I quickly discovered they all have lice.... love how no one told the gringas that before we came in. So yeah.... I dont have it YET. Im getting the lice shampoo... uh, we´ll see how that turns out.
Last night was our first night going out out. We went to centro san cristobal first. We call it gringo plaza because its the only place you bump into other gringos and they have a Nueva York Deli and real american pizza and lots and lots of beer. Its our usual nightcap spot. Then after we went to EL MAX´OH...my first discoteque. It was really fun, but I dont think I can dance that much again... the altitude once again takes its toll and we were all dying and sweating like beasts and coughing. Still, extremely fun.
So, en total, es la semana muy .... back to english, i dont now how to say this stuff.... amazing, fun, eye opening, and I think Ive learned more in 5 days than in the past year. And its only been a week. I miss you guys! Ill be putting my pics on a cd soon so i can upload them onto here. Adios gringos!
